  • During the winter, press the Test button on your carbon monoxide  detector.
  • Take weekly look at your water heater. A small puddle underneath can quickly become a major flood if not caught in time.
  • Clean the lint trap in your clothes dryer after each load.
 Monthly

  • Add enzymes to your septic tank to keep bacteria levels high. Flush 1 cup of brewer's yeast down each toilet each month.
  • Drain lines leading to septic tanks and cesspools need to be kept clean. Pour a cleaner specially made for the job down a toilet each month.
Every 2 Months
  • The seal on your refrigerator door will last forever if you keep it clean. Wipe it with a sponge and warm soapy water.
  • Run a lemon through your garbage disposal to keep it smelling fresh.
Every 6 Months
  • Lint in your dryer vent can create a fire hazard and decrease the dryer's efficiency. Follow the procedure in your owner's manual to clean our the dryer duct.
  • Replace air filters in your forced-air heating and cooling systems.
  • Change the batteries in your fire alarms and smoke detectors.
Spring and Winter
  • From the ground, do visual inspection of your roof shingles. Look for discoloring or torn shingles.
  • If you have brick on your house, look for cracks in the mortar.
  • Check your home's siding for stains or chalky looking substances and clean accordingly.
  • Check the caulk around your windows with your thumbnail. The caulk should be spongy to the touch.
