Here you find tips from our professional staff on ensuring
proper operation of various important parts of your home.
|
Daily
or
Weekly
|
- During the winter, press the Test button on your
carbon monoxide detector.
- Take weekly look at your water heater. A small
puddle underneath can quickly become a major flood
if not caught in time.
- Clean the lint trap in your clothes dryer after
each load.
|
| Monthly |
- In warm weather, gnats can make their home
in traps under your sinks. If you have this
problem, pour a quarter cup of bleach followed by
a gallon of water down each drain. This will kill
the pests and prevent more from moving in.
- Add enzymes to your septic tank to keep bacteria
levels high. Flush 1 cup of brewer's yeast down
each toilet each month.
- Drain lines leading to septic tanks and
cesspools need to be kept clean. Pour a cleaner
specially made for the job down a toilet each
month.
|
|
Every 2 Months |
- The seal on your refrigerator door will last
forever if you keep it clean. Wipe it with a
sponge and warm soapy water.
- Run a lemon through your garbage disposal to
keep it smelling fresh.
|
|
Every 6 Months |
- Lint in your dryer vent can create a fire hazard
and decrease the dryer's efficiency. Follow the
procedure in your owner's manual to clean our the
dryer duct.
- Replace air filters in your forced-air heating
and cooling systems.
- Change the batteries in your fire alarms and
smoke detectors.
|
|
Spring and Winter |
- From the ground, do visual inspection of your
roof shingles. Look for discoloring or torn
shingles.
- If you have brick on your house, look for cracks
in the mortar.
- Check your home's siding for stains or chalky
looking substances and clean accordingly.
- Check the caulk around your windows with your
thumbnail. The caulk should be spongy to the touch.
